Do It Scared: Embracing Fear to Unlock Your Potential

August 7, 2024

Fear is a natural part of the human experience, but it often stands in the way of pursuing our passions and achieving our goals.

If you’re scared about something, my best advice is simple: do it scared.

The Nature of Fear

Fear is just a limitation that blocks us from reaching our true potential. It creates invisible barriers that prevent us from taking chances and changing our lives.

But the more you confront your fears, the easier it becomes, and the smaller those fears get.

I used to have a huge fear of being seen online. The idea of posting on social media was incredibly uncomfortable for me.

One day, during a shadow work program with my mentor, we did a somatic breathwork session focused on the fear of being seen.

At that time, I hadn’t even realized I had this fear. The breathwork was liberating—it put my fear right in front of me and showed me it didn’t need to be that way.

Facing Fear Head-On

I discovered that we actually are our own biggest critic and we judge ourselves the hardest. By neutralizing this self-judgment, the fear became less daunting.

Gradually, the fear diminished to the point where I no longer cared about being seen. In fact, I now embrace sharing my journey because it has a purpose, and I’m passionate about it.

Of course, there are still times when I feel weird or cringey about posting certain things, but I do it anyway and almost always I completely forget about that feeling.

If it helps, think about how long you typically spend looking at other people’s posts.

Maybe 10 seconds, if that?! So don’t overthink it too much.

The Power of Authenticity

Being your authentic self is the best thing you can ever do. When you embrace who you are and share your true self with the world, the fear of judgment loses its power.

You start to attract the right people and opportunities that align with your authentic self.

Steps to Overcome Fear

  1. Acknowledge Your Fear: Recognize and name your fear. Understanding what scares you is the first step in overcoming it.
  2. Take Small Steps: You don’t have to dive in headfirst. Start small and gradually increase your exposure to the fear-inducing activity.
  3. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Understand that it’s okay to be scared and that you’re not alone in feeling this way.
  4. Seek Support: Join communities or find mentors who can guide and support you. Sharing your fears with others can make them seem less intimidating. You will also likely find others who have the same fears which can be very validating.
  5. Reflect and Repeat: After each step, reflect on your experience. Acknowledge your progress and keep pushing forward.

Fear is a natural part of growth and change. By choosing to do things scared, you gradually diminish the power of your fears and unlock your true potential.

So, whatever you’re scared of, embrace it and do it scared. The rewards on the other side of your fears are worth it. 🤍
